we march and they shoot
peace is not in their dictionaries
and neither is freedom
but we know what those words mean

they have taken our guns
so we use what we can
rocks are close to our feet
and cameras are in our pockets

sometimes we are silent
and sometimes we shout
but always the world can hear us
it hasn't come to our aid

will not?
or cannot?
we don't know
because we aren't allowed to know

we aren't allowed to question their authority either
but this is a law we can break
they may chain our bodies
but our minds are not yet broken

we walk for those who have fallen
for those who still refuse to give up
in memoriam of those
who have become our champions

our hearts may bleed
our bones may be shattered
but if I shall die it will be in the dust of
these streets
where my hope can find a new messiah

so we march
they shoot
but we will have freedom and peace
whichever comes first.

Originally this piece was inspired by the election protests in Iran in 2009, but in light of the wave of new rebellions taking place across the world, it seems to have taken on some more significance.
