Ride Your Own Magic Carpet
Childhood is
Wearing my Bulls hat to match my
stylish sweater my mom picked out for me
and
Being jealous that Joey could attract girls
like popsicles attract bees on a hot summer day.
Childhood is
Playing long games of Capture the Flag with
my friends while declaring the big tree out
front and the porch in back as jail
and
Chasing after my dog, Milo, after
he escaped from the backyard through
the gates we left open.
Childhood is
Singing the words to Bang on the Drum
All Day with my mom and sister on the
way back from my Grandma’s house
and
Wondering why it was forbidden to take
even the smallest crumb out of the kitchen.
Childhood is
Sitting cross-legged on the floor in front
of the T.V. and eating slices of bread
while watching Aladdin; hoping that one
day I would be able to ride a flying carpet too.
And
Childhood is
Never forgetting the dreadful day my dad died.
