Before She Sleeps
She steps into the shower
Closes the curtain
Turns on the water
Too cold
Hotter
Hotter
Too hot
She lets it burn her skin
The pain is better than nothing
Shes washes her hair
Lathers her body
Applies the shaving cream
Runs the razor over her leg
A prick of pain
The blood drips crimson down her leg
Such a beautiful sight
The red mixes with the white
A swirl of pink foam
Escapes down the drain
She lets the water run over the cut
Breathes in the sting
Her escape before she sleeps
She shuts off the water and steps out
Ignoring the towels
She lets the water pool on the floor around her
Her scarred legs shiver
Naked, she stands there
A knock on the door breaks through the roar of the fan
Pulling her from her ritual
“Aren’t you done yet? Get to bed.”
