Damned Forest

The trees stand tall
dark and looming
this is not a refuge
a safe haven
for wandering souls
this is a forest of the dead
a place for the lost
the broken
mistreated
dealt a bad hand
who carry on regardless
searching
for a light
as small as their eyes
that hides in the leaves
a teasing Tinkerbell
holding out a savior
but pulling back
as you trip over your feet
falling to the dirt
cutting up your hands and knees
those who inhabit
will not receive
a happy ending
