At Seven

At seven, all I wanted was to be superman
To save the entire world.
I wanted to protect its people
From pain and sorrow and hurt.
I wasn’t sure how to do this,
But at the time that didn’t matter.
At seven all I wanted to do,
Was to save other kids,
Kids like me,
From witnessing what I witnessed,
The gun shot, the fire, the scream.
The murder of my mom.
At seven I wanted to be a child,
Play games, laugh, and giggle.
At seven I wanted to jump rope,
On the corner with my friends.
But, for me at seven that was impossible,
for my father was no longer a father,
and my mother, she was gone.
