New World

The world is getting hotter and hotter.
The poles are melting like ice cubes.
Oceans and temperatures are rising.
Record after record of hottest days to date.

We are shooting ourselves in the head.
We are not thinking.
Our SUVs and minivans are shooting out carbon,
like a broken well.
Meanwhile, we cut down trees,
the primary reducer of CO2.

A little cyanide here, a little metal there,
I bet this water will taste good.
Putting poisons in our water,
and BPA in our children’s toys,
is such a great idea.

This is the New World, get used to it.

The author's comments:
Recently I have become very aware of the environmental dangers we are faced with and I am disgusted by the way humans are acting. So, this poem is to bring awareness to what we are doing to ourselves.
