Wheelchair
A sad naïve smile
And a sigh that follows.
It bears the weight of a thousand skies.
He leans in on her wheelchair as he pushes,
Holding his head in his hands.
What happened to her?
Why is she trapped in here?
This unforgiving hospital.
She’s different
But in your eyes is the hope of lost hope
And the spokes of the wheelchair keep rolling as life goes on.
Her time is short; even I know.
You hum to her a happy tune
That shrouds your worry.
She can’t decode it anyway.
Her mind’s been shut and locked away.
It’s been gone for a while now,
Hasn’t it?
The door shuts as the doctors pass
And life goes on.
He pulls up a chair and then he sleeps,
Holding his head in his hands
When the wheelchair stops.
