Long Road
It's a long road between here and where
we all must go.
If I was a painter I would've paused to paint
the mountains that've surrounded us and cradled us
for all these years. The sweet snow that
falls unsullied from the sky
would cap their heads the same
as it has for us so many times.
We must move doubtlessly along the long road
that we all must follow
that winds through the silent sentinels of
our youth
and into frontiers we have never seen.
But tarry on the long road as we move forward
in our shambling caravan;
One must not forgo reflection.
We are pioneers, the likes of which
never to be seen again
on our plane;
Off to new worlds
to shape in ways of our own pleasing
the gods of the twenty first century.
The long road will take us many places.
To citadels and long flung docks,
vast deserts and desperate oceans.
But we all began in one place.
The genesis of all our souls
was the beginning of a tall highway,
the long road,
the sunlight path.
May we not forget that.
