Dream World

And if I’m the only one who remembers,
Who’s to say that it wasn’t a dream?
The blows no longer hit as hard as they should,
And I can stand to hear your voice.
Because I’m resigned to believe that it was a dream,
A “once upon a time” that I came to know.
Because this doesn’t happen in real life.
But truth is stranger than fiction; I know that’s a fact.
And I’ll always carry our bond with me,
No matter where I go or what I do,
You’ll be with me, always.
But now I’ve given you a new place to exist,
A different time—a different world.
You exist only in my memory,
And we live two worlds apart.

Written about a month ago on the subject of the aftermath of a bad breakup. Also inspired by the line "two worlds apart" which was the original title for this poem.
