At Sea
The world is all gates, all opportunities, strings of tension waiting to be struck.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Your ship sets sail.
Don’t wait.
You’ll miss it.
Hitherto, all has been burdensome.
The past: irrevocable.
The present: inevitable.
But the future is uncertain,
for a fogbank lies ahead.
Once you set sail,
you will be immured.
There is no escape.
That is, until you reach
your destination.
You step onto the boat.
The wind against your back,
you are sailing leeward.
The deck sometimes nearly awash,
you remain vigilant and never
lose hope. But then the water calms,
and the wind stays steady,
and the ship sails smoothly once again:
the culmination of your trip.
You then reach your destination,
only to find another journey.
Another ship to catch.
Another voyage to embark.
You realize the destination you were searching for,
is elusive.
