He never knew what hit him.
Body collapsing, life draining, soul crying out,
The shovel digging into the ground.
Blue to gray, pale to white, his eyes losing life,
Staring into mine, asking why……
Up, down, up, down, pit growing deeper,
The darkness consuming the dead.
Light to dark, life to death, innocence gone,
His soul banished to another life.
Covered by the earth, buried, erased,
I searched for the next victim.
She never knew what hit her.

The author's comments:
The inspiration for this poem came while I was in English class. We had to write something that started with the line "He never knew what hit him" and it grew from there. The poem has a deep metaphorical meaning to it about death and how it can strike without warning, without the person ever knowing what hit them.
