"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me..." -Batman

Release me from this prison
From these iron bars and chains
From these padlocks and these fences
That bind this flesh with pain
Release me from my thoughts
And set me to the sky
To unfold unused wings
And finally learn to fly
Release me from my habits
From addictions and from scars
From things I swear I need
From this self-destructing heart
Release me from this shell
And set me to the air
Away from stirring waters
That can’t capture me up there
Release me from my bitterness
Release me from my doubt
Release me from my anger
And my willingness to shout
Release me from this selfishness
From hurtful things I say
From things done to inflict pain
That help push friends away
Release me from what I’ve become
From the past that haunts my soul
From the bondage I can’t break
From my absolute need for control
Release me from this life
And place freedom in my bones
Release my heart from slavery
From this feeling of being alone
So, release me from myself
From the sum of things I’ve done
And from the things that weigh me down
So I can wake up, and learn to run.

"I'd wanted to stay on that porch with him until the sun shone bright on both of us, but i didn't. I stood up and walked down the steps. I'd rather chase the sun than wait for it." from I am the Messanger by Markus Zusak.

This is the best poem I've read on here. A lot of what I try to capture in poetry, you've done in one simple poem. I love the turn around at the end, the repitition, rhyming, and rythm. Beautifully Written. Thank you for posting
