A nibble: a tender tug.
The red and white bobber dips
beneath the murky lake.
Down,
down,
down.
My shaky hands
slowly wind the reel.
As potential success breathes
under my fingertips,
my line snaps.
Just what that fish wanted.
The fish, the severed line—
I’ve been used.
Stealing my pride,
the frenemies beg for each possible
remnant of energy
until they break free.
Just what they wanted.
