I Thought I Saw

I thought I saw
The light that would take me away
It was a glorious light
Bright, piercing, warm
It came
Then went
Without me
The light went and took with it
My soul
It left with it a darkness
A darkness cold and depressing
It encompassed me
That darkness consumed me
I couldn't move
I couldn't hear
I couldn't think
Through the darkness pressing
It engulfed my body
My mind
My heart
Through the weight of the darkness
I glimpsed a light
Not that same glowing presence
But a new, hopeful light
I looked up into that light
And the darkness
Receded
