I Remember You

Sitting here on this bench
I think of you
I remember your strong arms
That held me so tight
That horror-filled night
When my tears kept flowing
And my heart kept screaming
I remember your shining eyes
That day I first saw you
That sunny beach vacation in Malibu
When my clumsiness tossed me into your life
And you never let go
I remember your perfect smile
That told me everything would be ok
That disastrous summer when my dad passed away
When I knew that, I truly loved you
And that you loved me back
I remember my heart
That pain you left me
That winter’s night back home in Kentucky
When you pulled that trigger
And ended it all
I remember your red cedar box
That your mom and dad chose
That they left closed
When I walked in the room
Because they knew, it was too hard
I remember your last goodbye
That very last night
That time you held me so tight
When I whispered, “I love you” for the very last time
And you didn’t smile
