Tonight
I collapsed into tears
Because earlier
My friend
Refused my lies
Peered deep into my soul
Leaving glimmers of love
As he left

When a fake smile
Danced across my lips
He saw my pain
Eased it
With love and laughter
When doubt
Nestled in my brain
He opened my eyes
To the truth
Careful not to leave
Until doubt vanished

Never have I revealed
Some pieces of my soul
And my friend
In his infinite wisdom
Of friendship
Has never once
Mentioned these pieces
Only comforted them
Consoled them in a way
Only a friend this close can

After my friend
Had crumbled walls
Moved mountains within me
I peered into his soul
Only to find
The same walls
Standing strong and ominous
The same mountains
Waiting to be moved
And inside I cried
Because he chose
To save my soul
Before his own

My fingers tremble now
As I realize
If his walls don't crumble
If his mountains don't move
It is my fault

My friend relies on me
As much
As I rely on him
For balance
On the swaying tightrope
Of life
