Lap of Luxury
A swish of silver slices the air,
With majestic grace, the tabby cat leaps,
Reaching for the dusty mouse.
Alerted by the golden bell,
Dangling from a sky blue ribbon,
The mouse darts away;
Scampers back to its hiding place,
Leaving the tabby to nurse his pride.
The cat bats at his burden with a soot black paw,
And his pink tongue smoothes his ruffled fur,
But can do nothing for his hurt dignity.
Prisoner to a metal bell with its blue ribbon,
The cat seeks comfort in the milky cream,
Waiting just for him in his blue china dish.
