Heartless Home

She lies in her bed; not catching a second of sleep.

Instead sleep flies by her and taunts her as the minutes pass.

She squints her eyes, covers her ears, and buries her head inside the pillows.

Almost as if it will cure her from the sound, take her way from this heartless home.

Even when she knows she cannot hide from it.

She hears them talking; loudly.

Their voices clear and crisp,

Drenched in cruelty and foul comments.

Could this really be her parents?

She lies in bed; not catching a second of sleep.

All she can hear is their screams.

A monster of reality, a nightmare of insomnia.

Her heart is filled with hope of a place that does not exist.

A home where there is love in the air.

She lies in bed; not catching a second of sleep.

She hopes to God they won’t hear her make a peep.

She solemnly swears to herself to always pretend; this isn’t real.

Maybe even dream outside her heartless home.
