The Real Me

By , Carmel, IN
if you think of me
as hard and cold
you clearly don't know
who i really am.
deep down:
my spirit is free
and remains unbroken
while what i want more than anything
is for the world to get along.

if you think of me
as ignorant and stupid
then obviously you don't know
how loving i can be.
i love my life
and i love this world
with the good and the bad--
even with the haters and pessimists
and people who think
the world can't change.

if you think of me
as fake and oblivious
then you clearly don't see
how i always look at
the bright side of every situation
and how real i can be.

if you think of me
as obnoxious and rude
you obviously don't know
the real me.
every single day
i put on a mask
and force a smile.

my friends accept it
but they know the truth
while everyone else believes it
and keep pushing the hate.
sure it hurts,
but i'm staystrong
because damn it--
I AM.
i am me;
i'm not going to change
because a few people
don't like the way i act
because i'd rather be hated
for who i am
than loved for someone
i'm really not.

you don't even know me.

before you start
bringing on the hate
make sure you know my story
and not just my name.
