Gunpowder and tears

There are tears in his dark brown eyes
Who says soldiers don’t cry?
He is scared
And so am I

He dries them with his camouflage sleeve
He looks like a man
In his Army fatigues

He’s replaced his tennis shoes
With a pair of combat boots
Reaches down to tighten their lace
Then stands back up
To give me one last embrace

I bid adieu
To my American soldier
As he boards the plane
His rifle slung over his shoulder
It will be months
Before I see him again
