Look Back

Look back.
I know we said goodbye though you didn’t want to.
I know it hurt… do you?
I know you already hugged me, tight into your soft grey shirt.
I know you said you’ll miss me, and I know that you know I’ll miss you too.
But I know I’ll keep reminding you anyway.

Look back.
I know your bags are heavy.
I know your heart may be also.
I know your mom has been waiting, suburban parked outside the garage.
I don’t know what you think.
I certainly don’t know what the future holds.

Look back.
I don’t know if you’re afraid of crying,
afraid of me crying,
or even afraid of anything at all.
But just look back one more time,
and let me see that smile that always makes me smile.

You didn’t.
You continued into the car.
I know you’ll have fun.
I know I’m afraid
of losing you.
