Desert

Dry desert,
choking heat,
heartbeat of earth,
steady beat.

A cactus rises,
casts a long shadow,
up in the air,
a vulture flies low.

A lizard on a rock,
tasting the air,
darts into the shade,
and lurks in its lair.

The land is barren,
little in sight,
a shadow appears,
masking the light.

Pressure changes,
over the land,
the first raindrop of many,
falls to the sand.
