Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.
~Louisa May Alcott

I step out from behind the curtain
Tentatively
Finding my place on the vast sea
Of hardwood flooring

The music begins
And
Suddenly
I lose myself
In the dance

The music whispers
Soft melodies
Steady rhythms
Speaks a story
Without words

My shoes glide
Fly
Leaping over the floor
They twirl
Tracing circles across the stage
In flowing pirouettes

The music continues
Smooth piano
Engulfing me
In a blanket of velvet melodies
I close my eyes
And the steps continue effortlessly

The music fades
The lights dim
And I dance away behind the curtain

For everyone who's ever put on a ballet slipper or tap shoe, for the dancers in the studio and the dancers in their rooms, for the dedicated, the talented, the passionate: this one's for you.
