Sorrow's Prisoner

I stopped the car on the wet-slicked highway
No will left to drive
A yellow line ran down the middle,
smudged and erased,
chafed like my sanity.
The red-brick buildings rose up around me
like a wall.
Claustrophobia set in.
The rain was pouring down
And I forgot to breathe.
Drowning in my reeling thoughts.
Pound on the rain-dropped window.
Nobody was coming.
Nobody was there.
My stomach churned.
Each beat I screamed that word,
Over and
Over and
Over again.
Nobody was coming.
Nobody was there.
I sank down in
my tear-stained seat
and clutched the wheel with empty purpose
Then, held my
broken hands
up to my face.
Feeling to see if I was still alive.
Pain stabbed me.
Nobody was coming.
Nobody was there.
Through fingers
I whispered
that final phrase
which fogged up the window.

This is so amazing. It is written with feeling and I feel so much empathy for the character.  Great work!
