Friends bail you out of jail. Best friends are sitting next to you saying "wasn't that fun?"

We play in the park,
on the cement chess boards.

The children play tag,

Check.
You’re it.

I start every game,
Moving the bishop, pawn,
and knight,
so that I can cross the rook
over the king.
Castling.
I always get stuck.
He would take over,
playing two sides at once.
All the while explaining,
every move.
I listen
to understand better.

The Pawn protects
even if it is weak.
The King
is protected,
by the
pawn.
But the pawn
isn’t always there.

Checkmate.
