The Other Side of the Barbed Wire Fence

His cheeks had sunken in, much like how the land looks after an earthquake. His head is shaven, but stubble collects on his chin.





His eyes; his eyes.
They are saturated by anguish. He is angry at the world; they stood still while his family suffocated and burned.





Slowly, he lifts his bony right hand up to the side of his face and his first two fingers form a sign of peace.





He has returned from the dead.

The author's comments:
In my Bio-Ethics class, we watched The Long Way Home which is actual footage from the liberation of the Jews post-World War II. I wrote this piece about one of the photographs of a refugee in the movie.
