The Tree

we were both young
when we fell in love
and i remember
our story

when we were starting out
you carved C+L 4 EVER
in the old oak
in your back yard

that carving stayed there for
what seemed like forever
but we didn't
do the same

there were so many fights
and tears and
i just couldn't take it
so i left you with no words to say

and as we parted
the tree grew over our carving
leaving no trace
of our love
