Beauty

I don't know you,
I've never even seen your face,
But please listen to my words
And take my advice.

When you look in that mirror
What do you see?
A failure?
Someone trying to be perfect?

I know you've heard this a million times,
But please, try to take this to heart,
Nobody's perfect
No matter how hard they try.

However, you can be beautiful,
More beautiful than anyone else,
If you believe in yourself
And accept who you are.

Set yourself free
From the expectations
This cruel and terrible
Society created.

You don't have to be skinny
With big boobs
And perfect hair
With make-up that changes you.

Be perfect, be someone else
Is what they're trying to tell you
What happened to
"Be yourself"?

Use that make-up to
Express yourself
Instead of hiding
Who you are.

And please,
Please, oh please,
I'm begging you on my knees.
Please eat something.

I don't know you,
I've never even seen your face,
But I have something to say,
I think you're beautiful.

The author's comments:
I'm a 9th grader in high school. A while ago, someone started putting up kind sticky-notes in the girls bathroom. A week ago she stopped. I don't know who she is or why she stopped, but this is the poem that I'm posting up in that bathroom tomorrow. Whoever put those sticky-notes up in the bathroom put a smile on my face to add to my laughing eyes that I always have, and she most definitely changed a few girls' lives. I saw that for myself.
