Honor Roll
They always say
there’s more to you
than your test scores.
But it seems
they have amnesia.
Transcripts,
grade point averages,
composite scores
are everything.
Only scraping the surface.
They don’t see
funerals attended,
parental feuds witnessed,
sharp-smelling shot glasses in the sink.
That should be the new grade:
the number of struggles suffered through
while still earning a 4.0.
But no.
That’s all kept hush-hush,
painting a pretty picture
over a stained canvas.
