"The toughest act to follow is yourself."

A gray bullet piercing through the smoky sky,
the train pulls into the station.
My feet cross the gap and I take my seat
on the clammy brown vinyl. There’s a space,
a gap, where you should be. Next to me,
the seat is empty.
My feelings mean less to you than the
crumpled newspaper beneath my seat.
Once again you’ve missed the train
And left me alone, in misery.
Tears roll down my face like the rain
rolls down my window, with the clouds
like silky shawls thrown to block out any light.
The world soars past me in a dismal
blur, interrupted only by broken buildings
splattered with neon graffiti
I used to enjoy train rides, until you made it
a habit to leave me waiting
Now I linger here alone, in a forlorn train car,
jostling along the tracks feeling thoroughly wretched
and a dreary thought dances across my mind:
They say the journey, not the destination,
Is the true reward – I can only hope this is not true,
Because as far as rewards go, this one is
thoroughly disappointing.
