Emotions for Sale

November 17, 2010
I am watching
Child’s laughter echoing through a hall
In red-purple streams
I cannot avoid
Looking at the ribbons of laughter
Envious of freedom denied

Society cuts emotions
Into metal boxes, passes them around
Labeled with price tags
This one’s ¢99
I buy it
Mourning the loss of a dollar
Mourning not being underage
When everything’s free

Yesterday I stole
Black ribbon from a collector’s edition
I hung it up
On a nail
