Today…
… a young black woman
whispers “I Do”
in a chapel filled with family
there to celebrate, congratulate
her holy matrimony with
a young white man.
… two little girls are swinging
side by side on a Pre-K playground
covering their cold little ears--
one with a toboggan,
one with a hijab.
… a solider kneels
beside a little Haitian boy
and wishes that he could provide more
than just clean water.
… we hold hands in front of the White House
to protest LGBT rights even
though we ourselves are heterosexual.
… a citizen becomes the parent
of a beautiful, abandoned Chinese girl.
… despite our differences,
we live united.
