On my trip to New York
my grandpa who was a dork
thought we should go to this restaurant

my grandma would disagree
and fill up with fury,
we weren't going to do what she would want

but really
with just a single look
that grandpa and I took
we were going
to the restaurant anyway

then one New York night
my grandpa and I in delight
took grandma by the hand
to Delfresco’s

as we sat at the table
they told me a fable
of a friend, I think was named jake
and his love for the Lemon cake

he would order
one

two

three
one for the table
one to take home
and the third he would say
“This one’s for me”

after this story
it was my time for the glory
of experiencing the Lemon Cake

when it arrived
I couldn't believe my eyes
it was twelve layers of
Lemon Frosted Delight

grandma split it in three
a bit to grandpa
a bit more for her
and the biggest of course
TO ME

we were done in five seconds
but we needed more
we eyed her plate and found the score

with a brilliant distraction
and grandmas slow reaction
a bit of lemon cake was ours to take

she gave me a stare
that I couldn’t bare
and laughed till our stomachs did ache

And that is the story of the Lemon Cake
