Running, running, running
my heart feels full
of fright and fear and anger
as I follow the crowd
middle of the night
weaving in between traffic
hold my friends’ hands
looking back at the flashing lights
policemen with their night sticks
towering brown buildings
this is not the world I know
the world is at a standstill
but rush all at once
my eyesight is in grayscale
and up the stairs we run
hiding from the man
we know we will be found
too scared to cry
in a room engulfed with dark fog
no open windows
hug my knees to my chest
the heavy door flies open
we’re blinded with light
goodbye
