I Never Thought
I breathe deeply, knowing that
No rain can save me or
Disguise the tears that spill
Secretly down my quivering cheek.
She was always there to wipe
Them away, always there
To help patch up my scarred
Heart. We were under a tree on a day
Like today, as I showed her the scars
From years of others taking
Cowardly shots at my heart that
shouted so loudly when she held
my hand. The roots tangled, scattered,
as we sat against its trunk, her always
open ear listening to my
steady strong heartbeat and
my fluttering weak words
as we listened to the melody
of the pitter pattering rain.
The fall leaves blanketed the ground
as we sat back and watched
The leaves fall away from our steady
Backrest; I never felt more secure.
But as leaves fell so her affection
Followed, moving from green to yellow
To red until- I sit under our
Tree and watch every piece of that
Beautiful world turn brown.
I look down, hand moving slowly over
Wet, tangled roots. My heart’s stopped moving,
And I have not a word to utter, and am left
With the cold backrest. I never thought
That the same ear who listened to
My scarred heart, who saw every
Blemish upon it, would be the one
To leave the most painful mark.
I breathe deeply, knowing that
No rain can save me or
Disguise the tears that spill
Secretly down my quivering cheek.
