it hides in my closet
under my bed
in the dark
it waits 'til slumber is on the verge of locking my heavy eyes shut
then it pounces
raps my brain
hammers away at the inside of my skull
rips away the pretty pictures i almost dreamt
forces me to think of a million tomorrow
and all of my yesterdays
it makes me nervous
makes me antsy
i writhe my hands until they're nothing but
bone needles
i bald as my wavy locks become a yarn in my lap
so i'll knit a scarf of optimism
and strangle that ugly thing
that hides under my bed
in my closet
in the dark
