Who knows what your previous life was like
Besides yourself
Your selfish ways keep me from seeing
The scars, behind your eyes,
In your heart.
Full of life and love, but scared nonetheless
You snap but it’s only nervous retaliation
As if expecting something worse that never again
Will come.
They do not want you back
But I don’t say it out loud,
Only I can help you now.
I lift my arm to praise you
But you fall to the ground
Fearful of the blows you expect to come raining down.
I wish I could tell you not to worry
In a way you could understand.
But for now I give you a kiss;
You lick my face,
My hand.

I too got a dog who acted like that. My brother has a gun and practices outside, sadly she cringes every time she see's it. I dont think i want to know what she went through.
