The Boy I Wish I Knew

We met that one day,
On the bus at camp,
It was warmer there,
Everyone seemed friendlier

Since we got back though,
I say hello,
And you answer in the simplest way possible,
Then walk away,
Like I’m a total stranger

And when you catch me staring,
I know what you’re thinking,
But see,
It’s not like that

I stare because you’re the most amazing person I’ve ever met.

I’m sure you’ve figured this by now,
But you’re not like the others,
Or anyone else I’ve ever met,
And when I stare,
It’s not because I’m in love with you,
Or really even crushing

I stare because,
I wish I knew you better,
I wish I could be your best friend forever,
Because the way you talk,
And the way you dress,
And the way you couldn’t care less
About what everyone else thinks,
We’re so alike,
And I’m afraid you’ll never know

One of these days,
I’ll build up the courage to really talk to you again,
Like the conversation on the bus

Two strangers,
With too much in common to ignore

Anyone with eyes can see
How different you are,
But it takes a special kind of person to see
The beauty of you
