Hardened Heart
She looks in the mirror .
Tears run down her pale cheeks.
Her face is white, her blood burning.
She see’s a girl,
A girl with a past.
A girl with pain.
Pain because of her loss.
She knows the girl is listening.
The girl is hiding in the shadows.
She watches in the mirror.
“I will harden my heart.
Is that how I stop hurting?”
She whispers to the girl.
The girl, her sister,
steps out of the shadows,
Lowers her eyes,
And thinks for a second.
“No.
You don’t harden your heart.”
The girl pauses.
“You only protect it.”
