dont forget this

“Don’t forget this”
And then you left me to wonder what you meant
I was so confused
Because how could I ever forget this?

Forget the love you gave me
I couldn’t
Forget the nights spent with you
I wouldn’t
Forget everything you helped me become
I can’t

Your arms wrapped around me
When that was enough to keep me safe
When you were my sun and my world revolved around you
And I didn’t want it any other way

You captured me, taking me to all your secret places
When you let me escape my head to enter yours
Because you knew my monsters couldn’t get me when I was lost in you
And I followed; glad to be rid of my chains
And you sacrificed your heart and shared the weight of my demons

You picked up the shattered pieces
Of my broken heart
And you taught me how to love again
How to trust and be free and to love myself
And when I was with you…it was easy to open up
And forgive myself

So it breaks me in two when you tell me not to forget
Because I know you’re leaving
And as you walk away it’s already beginning to fade

My lips no longer contain the remains of your sloppy careless kiss
The cinnamon gum that you always shared with me has lost its taste in my mouth
The light you put in my heart is quickly fading
And the glued together pieces of my heart are beginning to shatter again

And as you leave me, unlacing our fingers for the last time
I can’t help but think that maybe it would be better to forget all of this after all…
