little one,

i want to hold you close and save you

from this world

from the boy whose kiss will take the light

from your eyes

from the boy whose eyes

will bring it back

blue is just a color

like the sky

no deeper

than the ocean

it is not a promise

or a revelation

i want to give you the Truth

and keep you from It

because all Truths come in pairs

and your hands are small

i will tell you stories

about the summer i turned 15

and the summer i turned 16

and stories that even i don’t know

i will tell you things about your father

that are true

and some that are not

i will love you so tight

and hold you so much

until they teach you not to ask me questions

for which i have no answer

because your world is different

than the one i grew up in

but people are the same

innocence is a made up word

with no meaning

and so is love

all words were made up

once

do not cry because things are lost

but because dreams die

and then grow dreams

more beautiful than the last

your heart will break

a hundred times

in a thousand different ways

but, you will never lose faith

and if you come to me

i will worry

but, i will also care

and i won’t make things better

but, they will get better

because you will change

you are constantly someone new

so each day be stronger

keep your heart more guarded

and your mind more open

the future can’t be read

but, the past can be

take what i offer

hold my hand

your body came from my body

and there are things

that only we can know
