There’s a hole in my stomach
Where my soul used to be
I hold Kadokechi in my arms
His name means “bitter soup”
For his coming was like bitter gourds
That grow in the Rwenzori Mountains
His tiny body is so cold
I rock and croon to him
He will be
The fifth baby I have birthed in darkness
The son of my enemy and me

They came in the night
When the hibiscus was dying
Three took me away
Gwondoya, Zilabamuzale, and Ogwambi
Boys forced to be men
They made me theirs
And my first child was born
Omusana ogu gujwera omu mwirima,
Kandi omwirima tigukaguraazaaga.
And the light shineth in darkness
And the darkness comprehended it not.
