"Courage is fear that has said its prayers."

At five years old,
The journey begins
Like a new bloom of spring
The water, sun, and soil of children
Is the nurture, attention and love of parents
Comprehension and learning enters minds rapidly
Curiosity and aptitudes begin to shape the personalities
Like a sculptor with his clay on the dawn of a new masterpiece
Interest and opinions on politics, religion, and lifestyles start to form
As early relationships begin, innocent and naïve, like a first time politician
The battle for independence emerges sudden as the arrival of a rare shooting star
Followed by graceful maturity, staggered over the years following awaited graduation
Unpredictable paths follow growth from child to adult, possibilities for greatness, now reality.

The author's comments:
This poem was inspired by a group of nine and ten year olds that I had the pleasure of working with for six weeks. Watching them reminded me of the possibilities each of us has to make a difference in the world and where it all begins.
