My eyes glaze over them
The shadows wearing masks
A lack of substance hidden
With a pretty face
Numbness is evident
by their transparent bodies
afraid to feel
anything resembling reality
they drink away the pain
cloud their thoughts with smoke
until they don’t know which direction is which
or where they’re headed
our world has become a place
full of wandering illusions
each day
you began
to fade more and more
into one of them
a ghost of who you used to be
I tried to pull you back and
held as tight as I could
But your fingers slipped through mine
And you were lost.

This poem is about my friend who has struggled with depression and tried to kill herself a few months ago.
