Underwater Tears

By , Palo Alto, CA
Underwater tears don’t make a sound
Underwater breath is useless
Hold your breath anticipate the
Sharks coming my way

Waiting for an answer
Hope to god it doesn’t come
Underestimating the
Blinding face of the sun

Don’t you wish you had no choice
Like that girl right over there
Big round eyes like a gray whale
Careless with your fire hair

Tic Tac Toe
Played on your wrist
Arms crossed, you laugh a nervous laugh

The heart on your knee
Prompted an unaware
Smile but sick realization

When the music floods
Like the ocean into my ears
The notes are little splashy fish
And I smile to hear them sing

Though sometimes like a buoy
Heads bob through heat-stung crowds
We pass each other thoughtlessly
Not much better than the lonely buoy
