blending cayenne pepper
into chocolate dough
the ridges in her thumb-nails
catching bits of chocolate
preheated to 350 degrees
the taste of Mexico

cayenne,
known as the bird pepper
ground and pulped
sifted into a spice
blended with chocolate
the middle of winter
