Self-portraits are never easy to accomplish.
Looking at a photo is simple,
But what is it that you really see?
A mirror is harder still;
you have to stare yourself down,
eyes searching,
for any signature of your soul.
You have to face the fact
that you’re not quite intact,
when you can’t keep eye contact with yourself.
This soul-mapping is a challenge.
You must pinpoint and mark your measurements
to ensure the correct proportions.
It would be embarrassing if your ego was made too large
next to the size of your heart and mind.
But it’s even more mortifying
and mentally traumatizing
when you exert a great effort
only to find
that you know yourself as well
as an addict knows his problem.
