The Fence Is New

Can being friendly become an offense?
If I came out and said to you, “Come on—
Don’t act like that,” neither of us are friends.
The greatest height of kindness is to let
A man remain himself; the lack of that
Is lack of friendliness. So go ahead:
I still have hurt, but I won’t tell you so.
Life’s pain will move until it’s stopped by one.
That’s me. So build your fence; and when you need
A friend, you’ll have one on the other side.
