A young man,
A soldier,
Brave and strong.
He will fight,
All through the night,
Just to stay alive.
An explosion here,
An explosion there,
Nothing will stop this young man.
In his mind,
He comes to find,
War is not so fun.
Bullets flying by his head,
He is sure he ought to be dead,
But he is still alive.
The earth quakes,
Another explosion.
The screams of women and children are heard;
A suicide bomber.
That's when he remembers his mission is not yet complete.
As the people fled,
There are more dead,
What a gruesome sight.
The Mid-July heat makes him think,
Why he left his family,
To come to this place.
Children cry,
People die,
It's just a fact of life.
His final mission is done,
Though He won the battle,
He couldn't win the war.
He can return to his son,
Knowing that he took the Fathers of other kids.
He suffers the consequences.
Missing his right hand,
He salutes his commander one last time.
He hugs his wife,
As a tear falls down his cheek,
Knowing he was lucky,
As other fallen comrades will never get to come home.
War has forever changed this victorious veteran's mental stability,
Although his body was spared, his mind was slaughtered,
His wife notices this as well.
As this veteran's life comes to an end,
He knows that the true heroes are the ones that gave their lives,
And it is time for this veteran to join his fallen comrades;
To make his sacrifice;
To become a hero.

Thanks!  I originally wrote it as a more personal poem for what has happened in my family until one day I turned it in to my English teacher for extra credit and she turned it over to a publisher who became interested in my work!
