Passengers

Corner.
A striped T-shirt
Moles on his hands
Scratched with bitten nails.

Opposite.
A belly
Straining, stretching,
Rumbling over the rails.

Adjacent.
A nose
in a hardware catalogue.
Totally absorbed.

Standing
A beard suspended
By a cockney accent cracking
Fingers and jokes.

The author's comments:
This peice is meant to be set out so the stanzas create the four corners of a square to reflect the position of the people sitting.

I wrote it while I was riding a train about all the characters around me. The train was characteristically silent so I tried to isolate the individual sounds from each person.
